My trip to China was back in 2007 when I was still in College. I managed to charm my way into a Master’s class’ educational trip. So even though I was in still in the third year of my Bachelor’s Degree, my professor allowed me to go with his group (and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity). Granted, I had to pay for it, but as they say, traveling is the only experience that makes you richer!
Originally my friend from college told me she was going on this trip and that I needed to go too. When she finally convinced me I decided to make one of my first “adult” decisions. Being 20 years old and with a part time job, I wasn’t going to be able to afford the trip so I went down to the Financial Aid Office to ask for a student loan. After I signed all the papers and went to tell my friend, she told me she was no longer going to go because other financial priorities came up. Let me tell you something… I didn’t care! I was going to China!
Since I didn’t know anyone, I got paired with a guy I’d seen around the campus but hadn’t really met. He was going to be my roomate throughout this trip. We got along great and became great friends! Long story short, the fact that I didn’t know anyone when we first started this 2 week trip worked in my favor because I ended up meeting amazing people and becoming friends with them up to this day. We share a special bond because we visited this country together and opened our eyes to a completely different culture.
I will create a dedicated China post but for now, I will leave you with a short gallery of my trip to the cities of Beijing, Chengde, Xi’an, Luoyang, Shaolin and Shanghai.
As for my college friend… It’s been almost 10 years and we’re still great friends! Love her to pieces 🙂
